Thursday p.m. = Final draft with acknowledgments, reflections, works cited (to Turnitin, classID: 2698576, password: ignite)
Friday: Class outside... hope for good weather
Friday: Catch up on your Gandhi reading (see previous post for page numbers)... I'm not spinning the wheel for you mostly by myself like I did today.
Friday: Marcee & Sarah Devine kickoff
Friday: The people in the back corner who got assigned to be Gandhi, you need to answer Yes or No for the remainder of the items on the Doing list. Then take at least two of the items on the list and explain why you chose Yes or No. Post this to the blog and be prepared to speak on it in class.
Monday: Finish Hind Swaraj (66-119)
Monday: The non-Gandhis need to answer for the thinker I assigned you to... remember that you have the option of substituting a character if you've been given a creative writer (like for Shakespeare you could choose Bottom or Titania, for Morrison you could choose Cholly or Pecola, etc.) Again, that means Yes or No to each item on the list, and at least two fuller explanations. Posted to the blog.
Wednesday p.m. = email or link me a list of 10 possible book sources and 40-50 possible article sources...
Friday 5/1 = midterm
Photos from one of Gandhi's ashrams (thanks to Ankita):
Hey Aaron,
ReplyDeleteI went to India during the winter break this year and I visited one of the "ashrams" that you mentioned in section today. It is in western India. That was where he also lived for quite a long period of time along with his wife and other followers... so I have pictures..I don't know if you would be interested at all. I couldn't figure out where/how to post them on the blog...so tell me if you would be interested in viewing them.
Email me the pictures and I'll post them on the front page of the blog.

Eating: Yes. Economy was a factor in influencing the Nazis rise to power.
Environmental conservation: maybe? What about the book burning and all the paper they wasted on political propaganda posters?

Nazis would let them drown.
Praying: Nope!!!!!! “Reason and logic will let you strive toward perfection. Not faith but human improvement will lead to perfectibility”

Re: Antigone, I guess you could say working against city government is a category of working "in" it. As for not writing poetry, how about speaking it?
ReplyDeleteRe: Nazis. Yuck, it's weird how we seem to understand them better than anyone else we've studied this year. But I'm guessing the Philippines weren't considered part of the "Aryan" bloodline. Two things I thought of in connection to the Nazis... first, we might look on them as an instance of modernism gone wrong. (In fairness, we might look at Al-Qaeda as an instance of antimodernism gone wrong.) Second, consider that Aryan thing. The Nazis get their term and their swastika symbol from their very inaccurate understanding of... the history of India.
Re: Gandhi, it's an interesting point you make about "actually doing." He says this, almost exactly, at the end of Hind Swaraj, you'll notice. But he does seem to spend a lot of his time educating, etc.
Re: Luther, Marko has made a great clarification here of his point about "no longer believing what you thought you believed"... as for the diary, all of these medieval/renaissance Catholic intellectual types kept diaries, in the sense that they wrote memoirs ("confessions")... but a lot of them were meant to be read by others (the most famous being Augustine's... you can see to some extent that Descartes operates in this mode)
